Babyshambles - Albion

Artist: Babyshambles

Rating: 1.5/5

It would have been fitting for 'Albion' to be a somewhat poetic, a dreamy recollection of whatever it is frontman Pete Doherty is fascinated by at whatever moment he decided to write this. After all, if 'Albion' is what he and his merry band of followers are searching for, by releasing this single you'd have assumed they might just have found it, yes?

Unfortunately, the single release is a deathly shambolic mixture of Doherty's wailing - at times resembling a small child's imaginary games - and barely coherent musicianship. The lyrics, supposedly poignant, are nothing short of indistinguishable, and the semblance of a tune which intermittently prevails displays only what could have been rather than what is.

"Let his music do the talking", insist the bastion of Doherty loyalists. We have - but we can't quite work out what he's trying to say.

'Albion' is released as a single through Rough Trade on 28th November 2005.
