Babyshambles: F*cked Forever?

Artist: Babyshambles

So Babyshambles are over then? Come on, we all know it, and let's be frank, how many actually care? Bands don't just call off entire tours and pull singles for nothing. And with news that, not only had Pete [b]Doherty sacked his entire backing group, but had gone as far as to appear on stage with The Paddingtons (no, we can't think of a logical reason for anyone doing this either), there are more people carving out grave stones than there are still holding candles for pop's most dysfunctional urchins.

But why, pray tell, is it all falling apart?

Fucked Forever?

'Friends' say that one of the reasons for the fall out concerns a remix of 'Fuck Forever', done without Pete and after the song had been released to radio. Shifted back and back, at the last count it was due for release on August 15th. Don't hold your breath. Rumour has it that radio feedback has was less than complimentary; common opinion on the street - it's shit.

So, with Massive Attack, Madonna and Bjork colaborator Nellee Hooper brought in to try and spice things up a little, you'd think things could only get better. Not quite. Pete's toys came straight out of the pram, the reworked version isn't being used, and nobody is the wiser as to what is happening.

Band On The Run

On July 14th, Babyshambles pulled their Fuck Forever UK tour, due to start on the 26th. Official reason; they need to work on the album.

They could struggle with this; Doherty having sacked Drew McConnell, Adam Ficek and Pat Walden. He'd already had a punch up with the latter on stage in February, and the rest of the band haven't spoken to its 'enigmatic' frontman in over a week. Hardly the ideal settings for a quality recording session.

With dates not rescheduled, promoters insisting the tour will go ahead, and so many mixed signals coming out from the Babyshambles camp, most fans don't know what they should be doing with tickets. Many have turned against Doherty - their goodwill is running out fast.

The Album?

And will the album ever see the light of day? It's supposed to be out in October, and isn't even finished. Bare in mind DIY HQ already has a stack of promos for mid September releases awaiting review, and you'll realise how up against it they are. For a band who can hold it together, it could be done. With Doherty?

And that's not their only worry. Rumour has it that patience is running thin. Ignoring the tabloid circus surrounding Babyshambles' frontman, their woeful, often non existent performances this summer have hardly endeared them to those who pay their wages. Even their loyalest fans are starting to admit Doherty has lost the plot. The band's Wireless show was typical; wandering on stage clearly 'the worse for wear', one hour late, mumbling through five songs then wandering off. It's hardly going to convince your casual music fan that a Babyshambles album is a good investment, especially when it's set for release during the most fierce musical market of the year.

In reality, the only person who knows what may happen is Doherty himself, but this time it could even be beyond him, and his loyal fans. Time, and patience, is running out.
