We Are Scientists - After Hours
Artist:
We Are Scientists
Rating:
What the fuck has happened to We Are Scientists? One minute, they're a crime-fighting, teeth-brushing comedic trio who'd like to think they're the Beastie Boys (and that's just their videos), and the next they're this. 'After Hours' doesn't even sound anything like the We Are Scientists of old. It sounds like the bloody Killers, with an occasional hint of Interpol thrown in for not-very-good measure.
The band were never particularly interesting - their on- (and off-) stage personas massively outweighing their musical output, cover versions of 'End of the Road' on tour overshadowing anything else they actually perform live - but at least they'd got hooks, both lyrical and guitar-based. 'After Hours' has nothing of this. The opening riff sounds like a bad copy of 'Don't Look Back Into The Sun', the vocals are a rubbish Hot Hot Heat even in comparison to their latest material, and yes, it sounds like it was written by Brandon Flowers. And we're not talking Duran Duran-worshipping 'Somebody Told Me' Killers either: this is full-on album-track "oh my God is Brandon CRYING?" Killers. In short, it's dull.
We Are Scientists are funny. We propose they quit the 'music thing' and go film a US-based equivalent to Peep Show. You know it makes sense. More sense than this.
'After Hours' is released as a single through Virgin on 3rd March 2008.

What track were you listening to? Because the one I heard sounded like a natural evolution of their sound to great effect, and I have no clue at all how you can think those vocals sound like Hot Hot Heat... that guy sings like a crazy person, Keith still sings in a natural voice.

jeez, lady...The Killers? Hot Hot Heat!? Why not think of some ORIGINAL comparisons, or maybe some that are actually true?

I actually loved this track, and also thought it seemed like a natural prgression from the last album.
Oh well. Each to their own, eh?

I'm not some massive WAS fan but I have to make my point here.
End of the Road was a poorly executed comedy cover version you daft cow. Course it doesn't overshadow the rest of their live output. Even the dullest WAS songs aren't as dull as your writing.

I like this We are Scientists, and I have to say, after having seen Hot Hot Heat live, the lead singer of this band is way better and way more sedate than the leader of HHH. Furthermore, I like the Killers but anyone who mentions Somebody Told Me, as if it was the best pop song ever written is questionable to me. If the 'crying' reference is the writer's way of complaining about the songs on Sam's Town, it's unfortunate, because Sam's Town is a really good record-- even though it's not as poppy or as mindless fun as songs like Somebody Told Me or some others that can be found on Hot Fuss....

As Tom mentioned, everyone is entitled to their own opinion regarding this new single and, by extension, the upcoming album. However, seeing as this is a journalistic review, I expected you to have a bit more substance to the critique in addition to an adequate understanding of the history of the band (and song) in question. Nathaniel has accurately pointed out that this single highlights the evolution of this band's sound--a fact Keith and Chris have alluded to constantly in interviews. Rather than key in on that crucial fact, you've chosen to overlook it and make factually weak comparisons to other bands. I disagree with your shallow review as well as your inaccurate grammar and punctuation.

Surely, just because the sound has changed, that doesn't mean it has changed for the better! I have heard this song and think it's rubbish, and the comparisons here might not be the most original but they're at least accurate.

You know nothing of music if you think The Killers are rubbish. They are a great band, their songs are really good and Brandon is very talented.
Just listen to "Read my mind", "All these things i've done" or "My list". They´re pure genius. "Somebody told me" is good but definetely not their best one

Emma Swan is a fucking idiot "After Hours" is a brilliant song and so is all of We Are Scientists other work. The only reason you think it sounds like the Killers is because "After Hours" is in the same key as some of the Killers songs. You don't know what your going on about and also We Are Scientists a sooo funny.

This is the first We Are Scientists song that I've really liked ... and not just liked, I absolutely LOVED it. I reckon it will be my favourite song of 2008, and the video is even better, so funny.
