"I'm gonna strip you down naked, cover you in placenta juice and stuff you in a bag with Tegan and we'll see how much you like it!"
WOAAAAHHOOOHHHH!
"There are like some, totally fetish people here tonight.."
The chat at Tegan and Sara gigs is brilliant, especially when it turns a bit surreal now and then. Like when they say 'We're going to dedicate this song to someone special who should be very happy right now'. The idea that they might dedicate a song to Hillary Clinton is hilarious. Until they do. Bananas.
Tegan and Sara fans really like Tegan and Sara. The enthusiastic whooping and cheering is one thing, but people down the front at this are gig screaming. Like really, really screaming. It gets to the point when Sara eventually remarks that she isn't entirely sure how to react to such adoration. "Is that how you feel about me? Like, really? Should I scream back at you? I don't know!"
They could probably play whatever they want tonight, certain sections of the crowd will be still be going absolutely nuts by the end of it. In fairness, if they just decide to cover the latest Nickelback album they'll probably do it with enough style and likeability for it to be pretty good. Maybe.
There's something about these two - maybe it's the earnest melodies and the cute banter. Whatever it is, it makes you just want to bound up to them and say "Hi, I really like your shoes! Wanna be mates?"
'The Con' skillfully skirts the lines of 'Emo' dross and arrives and a solid, listenable pop song. A similarly poppy favourite, 'Nineteen' fails to come out quite as well, however, with recorded vocals proving rather a lot to live up to live. An enthusiastic rendition of 'Back In Your Head' is a thoroughly enjoyable experience while runner-up highlight spots go to 'Walking With A Ghost' - a flawless rendition of a really, really good song and smart ballad 'Call it Off' which is as sweet as sugar.
The feel of the performance is polished and professional, the ladies are upbeat and they're clearly at home showcasing some of their best material to date. Catching them earlier at Bush Hall would've been a real treat, but they're equally comfortable in the size of the venue, they're effortlessly crowd pleasing and manage to engage with the audience as if it were a quarter of the size.
Oh and it was 'So Jealous' that they dedicated to Clinton, for those of you who might be wondering. Do your best not to think about it too much next time you hear it, perhaps.
