After a second fantastic record, The Long Blondes get to play their biggest gig yet in the venue that they were made for. Fears that a 'secret' show at next door's Fuzz Club little over a month ago would damage ticket sales proved unfounded, and it's a great turn out.
Support act, XX Teens, leave the stage to mostly indifference, and the smoke - and atmosphere - builds up in anticipation for the main event. Their iconic logo is lit up as the band come on stage, and after a quick hello they belt out the short, sharp 'I Liked The Boys' and oldie 'Autonomy Boy' without pausing for breath. Anthem 'Once And Never Again' is thrown away early in the set, much to the crowd's surprise, but is met with huge applause. It's followed by latest single, the electro-disco epic 'Century', and barely fifteen minutes in this is sounding like a greatest hits set. And so it should: The Long Blondes have material to burn, filling the octagonal shaped room with songs barely a week out of the packaging sounding like classics-in-waiting.
After the oddest track from 'Couples' - the creepy, synth-tastic and sexy 'Round The Hairpin' - gives the crowd pause for breath, The Long Blondes let out first album highlights 'You Could Have Both' and 'Separated By Motorways' which are greeted with the kind of enthusiasm usually reserved for a long-absent lover. They're on top form: Kate, as usual, looks stunning and shows herself once again to be arguably the greatest frontwoman of this generation, whilst Dorian, Screech, Reenie and Emma don't disappoint either. Keep this band on these size stages and watch them take over the sensible-thinking world.
'Guilt' is announced as the next single, and 'I'm Going To Hell' gets the band lit up in reds and oranges before they say goodbye with 'Giddy Stratospheres', prompting the many mirrorballs hung around the room to leap in to action more than at any other point throughout the night. It's glam, camp and utterly ace. They encore with 'Lust In The Movies' (providing the only problem of the night - the guitar is too loud in the mix), just in case we thought they'd forgotten it. Band, crowd and everyone leaves very happy, and they manage all this without using biggest hit 'Weekend Without Makeup'.
