Jim Noir - What U Gonna Do

Artist: Jim Noir

Rating: 3/5

There's only one decade which springs to mind when listening to this comeback single from Jim Noir. Predictably, it's the 1960s. In all honesty this sounds like an offcut from The Bees' masterpiece 'Free The Bees'.

The guitars are reminiscent of those other Sixties followers, The Bishops, only slightly less domineering. The keyboards are rather good in a 'black and white television clip of how holidays used to be' kind of way. The drums sound like they were recorded in a shed, which of course is the best place to record drums for this particular style of music.

Despite this, there's a distinct whiff of a lack of ideas on this single, not in its ability to surpass the influences of a single decade but in the chorus. It's just too repetitive. The song barely breaks the two-and-a-half minute mark, but most of this is made up of chorus. Repeated.

Overall, this song's a nice enough slice of summer pop that'll probably end up on a Bulmers advert. There's little doubt that you'll find yourself humming it after more than a couple of listens. Whether you get immensely irritated by this or not is another matter entirely.

'What U Gonna Do' is released as a single through My Dad Recordings on 31st March 2008.
