Holly Miranda - The Magician’s Private Library

Album Reviews

We can't help but feel like there's a massive piece of inside information we missed out on.

XL Recordings, 22nd February 2010 / By Harriet Jennings
Holly Miranda - The Magician’s Private Library Holly Miranda is one talented lady. We're not disputing that fact. But sadly 'The Magician's Private Library' doesn't quite live up to its potential. It could have been an epic, transcendental masterpiece but, despite being a fine album, instead it leaves you feeling a bit cheated. The ability is clearly there, the song writing is wonderful and don't even get us started on that voice but something quite major appears to be missing.

Produced by TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek, this album sees Holly Miranda exploring a whole host of tragic tales in a somewhat otherworldy fashion. Her ethereal voice mixed with simple piano and some gorgeous synth work result in a beautiful blend of sounds echoed from track to track. It's a little bit like Holly fell down the rabbit hole and this album is what she found. Maybe it's a result of the all night sessions but we can't help but feel like there's some kind of inside information we missed out on.

Album opener, ' Forest Green Oh Forest Green' is not the strongest track but certainly gives the listener a gentle introduction into what's to come. The slightly more sinister 'Joints' takes a turn for the more exciting but appears to be let down by over-production. It's all very melancholic and a bit dark but 'Slow Burn Treason' showcases the leading lady's voice nicely, and is probably the track to listen to if you want a little taste.

Fans of Laura Marling and Angus & Julia Stone might enjoy 'Everytime I Go To Sleep', one of the record's more upbeat numbers. It's still a little bit dark and twisty but with a happy streak and haunting vocals.

Perhaps one for the background, 'The Magician's Private Library' is certainly neither attention-grabbing or ground-breaking, but it does have a dark, mystical appeal.
