Hard to get too excited about.

Ratatat - LP4 Let's not beat around the bush: this new offering by effortlessly cool electronic whizzes Ratatat is nothing new. Written at the same time as 'LP3', 'LP4' sounds like a lazily constructed second part of the previous album instead of something new and innovative. But then again, how creative can a band with no vocalist be after nine years?

Looking objectively, though, there's a lot of interest to be found here. Opener 'Bilar' combines dubstep-inspired beats with interludes of violins and synthesisers; a song that is sure to make you swagger in the street. 'Drugs' is another standout, with a quiet, unassuming introduction bursting into a chaotic, fast-paced fight between electronics and Ratatat's signature piercing guitars. In 'Neckbrace' the tiny two-piece band delivers a massive sound well worthy of becoming a club favourite, and 'Party With Children' sounds like video game music for the 21st century. The rest of the album, though, is hard to get too excited about.

From a band who were once so future-forward, Ratatat are stepping into the danger zone of being overtaken by their rivals - but with a few gems still to be found in 'LP4', it might be best not to give up hope just yet. Rating: 6/10
