Brian Jonestown Mascare are an American band, led by Anton Newcombe. Despite the poor recording quality of the first two album 'Methodrone' (1995) and 'Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request' (1996) they became Psychedelic gods. The award winning documentary, Dig! shows the seven developing years of BJT and The Dandy Warhols that brought the band great success. 'Sailor' is taken from 2004's 'Tepid Peppermint Wonderland'. 'Nowhere', in my opinion, is one of the greatest albums in the shoegaze genre. The track 'Nowhere' comes from the bonus album that was released in October of 1990. It was Ride’s debut release, and they have since recorded a further three albums. The fourth and final record, 'Tarantula' was released shortly after the initial break up, but failed to sell as well as their previous efforts. The band then officially parted ways in 1995.
Spaceman 3 were a minimalistic psychedelic band from Worchester. This is the third track from 'Playing With Fire', released in 1989, which would be there penultimate studio album. Peter Kember and Jason Pierce, the founders of the band, have since had successes with Sonic Boom and Spiritualized. The song, 'How Does It Feel?' has a repetitive structure, with spoken lyrics throughout. The LP was written by Pete Kember on Taang Records.
[A] 'Touch Sensitive' is a gloomy trip hop track, from the album 'Rings Around The World'. The album received critical acclaim and was also the world's first simultaneous release of an audio and DVD album. Gruff Rhys introduced a range of themes within the album, including the pollution of space and religion.
Django Django released their debut self-titled album this week. The Edinburgh four-piece have been described as an art-pop psychadelic band, drawing influences from the likes of The Beta Band and Hot Chip. Nevertheless, the band's own description of themselves is one I much prefer, with their press release citing them as "a triple distilled essence (and sensibility) of an artistic huddle of mischievous musicals".
'Magical Mystery Tour' is a double EP, with six of the tracks used in the soundtrack for the 1967 film under the same name. After the success of 'Sgt.Peppers Lonely Heartclub Band', The Beatles wanted to create a film that related to them, and their music. 'Blue Jay Way' was one of the songs that was included in the film, and the only track on the album that was written by rhythm guitarist, George Harrison. He, in fact, wrote the song whilst waiting for his friend Derek Taylor in a house he rented in Los Angeles on the street named Blue Jay Way. The song is heavily repetitive, with the lyric “don’t be long” repeated a hefty 29 times. When recording the track, the vocals, organ and drums were played on two tape machines and taken slightly out of sync to create the phasing effect.
'I Don’t Want You On My Mind' is taken from Bill Withers second album, 'Still Bill'. This album included two No. 1 singles including 'Lean On Me' and 'Use Me'. 'I Don’t Want You On My Mind' is one of the more blues structured tracks, with a sludgy acoustic riff playing throughout the song.
'The Breaks' is a standard blues track as taken from the first album by The Black Keys, 'The Big Come Up'. The whole album was recorded in Patrick Carney’s (Drummer) basement. The Black Keys name supposedly came from a regular statement made by Alfred McMoore, who was said to call the pair "black keys" (i.e. D flat), when he was annoyed at them. The Black Keys are currently touring the UK after their 7th album release, 'El Camino' which came out last month.
Amorphous Androgynous are an experimental electronic band, who also use the name of The Future Sound Of London to release experimental techno material. 'The Lovers (Love Is the Lover)' comes from the band's second album 'The Isness & The Otherness', which was the first record in which the band delved into psychedelic rock. The composers for the band, Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans, are currently collaborating with “Noel Gallagher & The High Flying Birds” in preparation for his second solo album.
'Tugboat' comes from the band’s fourth and most recent album. The band's sound includes guitar harmonies, long instrumental sections, and Beach Boys-like vocals. The sound has been described as psychedelic pop-rock. The bands were initially just studio collaborating, but they have grown into a live ensemble that also includes members of such similar minded psychedelic bands such as Land and Sea, Tussle and Horn of Dagoth.
