Everyone loves a good Christmas film. There’s nothing quite like curling up on the sofa with your family and friends to watch one of the many classics which are repeated every single year. These films are like good friends who you can rely on coming back to greet you every Christmas, so despite the festivities being almost over for one year, Daryl Smith runs down his top five Christmas films ever.It was a very hard decision deciding which of the two films are the best (don't argue with me about the fact that there's a Home Alone 3 and 4, they are both so bad they don't count as films). Both movies tell the story of a boy and his forgetful family who seem to be incapable of spending Christmas together. I decided on Home Alone 2 because of it having more violence and laughs than its predecessor, as well as having a less creepy misunderstood old person (Pigeon Lady). A moment that stands out for me is when one of the sticky bandits is electrocuted and you see his skeleton, knowing very well in real life he would be a pile of ash.
I am a massive Arnold Schwarzenegger fan; he has starred in some of my favourite action and comedy films, and Jingle All The Way is a combination of both these genres. It's the ridiculous tale of Schwarzenegger trying to get a toy for his son. Cue chase scenes, fights with postmen and illegal jetpack piloting. Oh, and loads of classic cheesy Schwarzenegger lines like, "I'll know if you move 'cause I have the ears of a snake!".
Elf has everything you might want in a Christmas film: elves, Santa, reindeer and an overly aggressive dwarf. Will Ferrell gives an amazing performance as the dim-witted man Elf Buddy who tries to live life as a normal person. He fails to do so but instead brings back Christmas joy to the world. The film is very clever at mocking traditional Christmas classics whilst at the same time becoming one in its own right, this is why I love it.
There's been so many film versions of Dickens' Christmas Carol, and everyone has their favourite, but mine is the Muppet's. It tells the story brilliantly and hilariously, and all with some great songs (which I sometimes find myself singing, especially at Christmas time). Michael Caine is the perfect actor to play Ebenezer Scrooge. He looks, sounds and acts just how you would imagine Scrooge to. There are also some outstanding performances from Kermit The Frog, Miss Piggy, Gonzo and the gang, bringing more life to the film's characters than many breathing actors could ever do.
This could be a controversial choice as my favourite Christmas film, especially when it could be argued that it is primarily a Halloween film. However, the Nightmare Before Christmas is my favourite Christmas film because it is so magical; the animation in the film is done brilliantly. I truly love all of the bizarre little characters in it, and it's hard to not feel that they are all alive. The songs are all really fun and the story itself (about the pumpkin king losing his love for Halloween and trying to steal Christmas) is heart warming and very funny.
