If Rihanna and Gaga are fighting out to work out just who gets to be The Best Pop Star In The World Right Now, then in 'Judas' we're dealing with a potential knock out blow. Both capable of keeping the charts interesting, this potentially makes 'Bad Romance' look like a warm up routine.A measure more interesting than even her first WTF was that entrance, it's easy to see why 'Born This Way' was chosen as a comeback single, but this is the Gaga that rewrote the pop landscape.
There are elements of 'Judas' that will have over pop stars running for their sketchbook, and though accusations of 'Bad Romance' part 2 will hold water to an extent, there's enough here to show the kind of evolution that others are won't match for a long while yet. At no point does a song that, by title alone, suggests shock tactics ever seem cynical; nothing feels like bible baiting.
Yes, there are the lyrics - sure to resort in someone somewhere getting a tad overheated - but the true delight of the second single from Gaga's latest album lies in that synth. Steeped in the Gaga lineage, 'Judas' puts rocket fuel in the tank of her previous greatest hits. Literally thumping its way through the verses, on first listen the most interesting moments are to be found outside of the chorus - if only for the quite frankly amazing line "Judas kiss me if offenced, or wear an ear condom next time".
Nobody else would get away with that, and that's exactly why Gaga still reigns supreme.
