Welcome to the first Under the Radar of 2012. As an extension of the Filthy Disco DIY Radio show - this is where I deliver regular doses of new music from exciting bands that you simply must get to know. Simples. So for this edition of Under the Radar the band in question is Default Collective.
Their music is full of distant whispers, haunting lyrics and cinematic drama - Default Collective are my new favourite band to cycle through rainy London with. I can’t help day dreaming of gangsters, rogues and sadness down by the canal. It’s not all gloomy though - there are plenty of ecstatic explosions and moments of pure glory.
1. They were formed in 2008 by Laurie Langan and James Hayward and are based in London.
2. They make dark cinematic music and draw inspiration from Massive Attack, Bat For Lashes, Little Dragon and UNKLE.
3. They’re about to start rehearsals for their first ever live shows which are set to begin this year.
4. They originally formed to create instrumental music, but a chance meeting with vocalist Sarah Palmer led them to use lyrics.
5. Their debut album ‘Englander’ is available to buy now and features the vocals of James Whelan, Sarah Leanne Palmer and Guy Stevenson.
And if that’s not enough for you, here’s an interview I did with Laurie from the band last year...
Until next time, happy listening.
Sarah Thompson.
