Falty DL - Atlantis

An EP that, while variable in quality, still has more than enough to add to Falty DL’s reputation.

New Yorker Drew Lustman, aka Falty DL, has proved himself adept over the last few years at combining lots of disparate sounds from across the wide spectrum of dance and electronic music to create wildly eclectic, unclassifiable, but always interesting, music. His latest EP ‘Atlantis’ is no exception.

Following on from March‘s ‘You Stand Uncertain’ album, the ‘Atlantis' EP mines a similar artistic furrow to his previous work and elements of techno, house, UK garage, Drum n Bass and dubstep can all be detected in the four tracks collected here. The title track is a slow burning menacing hum. Built around a droning bass and syncopated garage percussion, there is a palpable feeling of tension created by the pulsing bass; it makes for a striking lead track.

‘Can’t Stop The Prophet’ is more playful, featuring a prominent female soul vocal that is warped and twisted over some dreamy orchestral samples giving a blissed out floaty vibe.

‘My Light, My Love’, despite its strange noises that sound like he is sampling a rattlesnake, unfortunately does not really go anywhere and is rather forgettable. However, final track ‘The Sale Ends’ more than makes up for this and its smooth and funky two step shuffle is a great way to end an EP that, while variable in quality, still has more than enough to add to Falty DL’s reputation as one of Americas pre-eminent dance producers. Rating: 7/10
