Spaghetti Anywhere - Spaghetti Anywhere

Spaghetti Anywhere - Spaghetti Anywhere

Spaghetti Anywhere should consider changing their slightly lame name to ‘Belle & Sebastian JNR’, because that’s exactly what they are. If you can’t get enough of that cute Scottish twang and folky storytelling, this might be for you. But the truth is they aren’t doing anything original. It’s not so much a carbon copy as a poor impression: it sounds like boys who want to be in a band but don’t have any good ideas of their own.

The new four-track EP is certainly easy-going and inoffensive, with songs developing into nod-a-long, foot-tapping indie numbers. By the second chorus we’re already catching on to the lyrics, which is sometimes all you want from your music. After all, you only have to look to the charts to see that the gullible public are quite fond of recycled tunes with repetitive hooks - and I will admit that I found myself infuriatingly unable to get one of the songs, ‘Girls with Boyfriends’, out of my head. But if you’re looking to be enlightened or challenged, look elsewhere. Tracks like ‘Gregory’s Girl’ are a bit like a big slab of tablet: sweet to begin with, but you’ll quickly get sick of it.

On a more positive note, Spaghetti Anywhere have the potential to be a delight in their own right, but it needs more work. Lets break some ground, lads.
