Wot Gorilla?: not only the title of a Genesis song, but a band from Halifax, who don’t sound like Genesis at all. According to their MySpace they "can’t explain" what they sound like and have "all sorts" of influences, but unfortunately the sound is not as innovative and interesting as they’d probably like it to be.Singer Mat Haigh’s voice reminds of Brian Aubert from Silversun Pickups, whilst the songs sound a bit like Los Campesinos! with more guitarists. Their self-titled EP is a mess; nervous, unstructured, rushing through styles, erratic yet predictable, and sadly so wannabe-innovative.
The song titles reflect this: ‘We Go Way Back Like Spinal Cords And Car Seats’ is a classic (new) indie song title, the track itself somewhat undefinable indie pop-rock; ’6 Double 5 3 2 1’ then picks up where track one leaves off, giving a constant feeling of deja-vu.
‘Q W E R T Y’ could be a contestant for one of the most genius titles of 2010, but the song once again leaves you unfazed. ‘Cornelius’ could be a little epos with its six and a half minute length, but it’s not and simply sounds exactly like the previous three songs. Closing ‘23’ doesn’t bring anything new either, just slows the pace a little.
Their qualities are likely more evident live, but here whilst there's the urge to call the tracks quirky, fun and diversified, they just aren’t. Which is a shame, really.
