Coming Up: David Shrigley, Brain Activity1st February – 13th May 2012, Tickets £10
If trudging round art galleries looking at the old masters isn’t for you, try trudging round The Hayward looking at a new master. A master with a wry, chortle-inducing take on life who simultaneously manages to ride the waves of pop culture and art and seduce them both.
Yep, we’re talking about British artist David Shrigley, he of amusing crudely-drawn postcard fame, Guardian cartoonist, and a lot more besides. Next month sees the opening of his highest-profile show to date which will see over 175 of his artworks get an airing at The Hayward Gallery on London’s Southbank.
Expect devilishly funny cartoons, photographs, ceramics and sculptures such as a stuffed Jack Russell dog holding a sign saying ‘I’m dead’. There’s no way you’ll leave this exhibition without either a) a smile on your face, b) a look of utter bemusement, or c) a haul of David Shrigley-related goodies from the shop.
