Old Vic Tunnels, London, 9th - 26th February 2012. Tickets from £5

The month of February is notoriously damp and gloomy, so why bother trying to change it? There’s snow on the ground, the sun refuses to shine, and winter looks set to last at least until April. So what’s the answer? Head deep into the underbelly of Waterloo, and embrace the darkness. Here, for most of the month you’ll find the Vault Festival.

Opera, theatre, a ‘devilishly cheap bar’ and great music are just a few of the reasons you’d be wise to check this place out while you can. The three weeks are packed with all sorts of entertainment, and if you head through the Leake Street door on a Thursday or Sunday night, you’ll also get to see madcap cabaret from Baxter’s Basement for free from 10pm.

Our pick? The horror-exclusive cinema. We’ll be bringing a cushion to hide behind, but where better to spend an evening getting scared out of your senses than in tunnels underneath Waterloo?
