The Diary: 6th - 12th February 2012
Here’s your weekly rundown of things to do.
Barflies, The Barony Bar, 81-85 Broughton Street, Edinburgh, EH1 3RJ. Tickets £6 - £15. A cunning way to get those who wouldn’t normally watch a play, erm, watch a play, is to set it in a pub. Genius. All the action happens in the dimly-lit surroundings of The Barony Bar, and as you might expect from the title, this play by Charles Bukowski offers everything you hope for from a good night out: booze, brawling, and a little bit of sauce. Damien Hirst: Charity. Royal West of England Academy, Queen’s Road, Clifton, Bristol, BS8 1PX. There’s no need to even step foot inside the door to take in Hirst’s 22ft high statue depicting a Spastics Society charity collection box from the 60s/70s, as it’s set on the roof above the main door. Scuffed, unloved, and holding a raided collection box, this statue of a little girl in leg callipers is a poignant comment on society.
Olympic Pop, Wolverhampton Art Gallery, Lichfield Street, Wolverhampton, WV1 1DU. £Free. If only we could get excited about the 2012 Olympics, but in all honesty we’re more interested by this – an exhibition featuring posters from the 1972 Olympic games by a selection of artists such as David Hockney, Tom Wesselman, and Allen Jones.
The Creative Crafts Show, Event City, Barton Dock Road, Manchester, M41 7TB. Tickets £5.45 - £7.95. If you’re not afraid of nudging a few grannies out of the way, crafters will enjoy a wander round this temporary city of all things craft. Workshops, demos and makes and takes are all part of the fun – very Blue Peter.
Andy Zaltzman: Armchair Revolutionary. Soho Theatre, 21 Dean Street, London W1D. Tickets £10 - £15. Who doesn’t have something to say about the state of the country we’re living in? If you don’t, fear not, Andy Zaltzman’s got plenty of thoughts to share around. Cue an evening of jokes about economic idiocy, revolutions and social and political upheaval. Plus some about dogs.
Torture Garden Valentine’s Ball, The Coronet, 28 New Kent Road, London, SE1 6TJ. Tickets £35, advance £30. One room will be host to hospital beds, body parts and medical play equipment, while another will feature a fashion show by Jane Doe Latex. We’ve come to the conclusion it’s probably not something for the Belle and Sebastian fans out there.
Threshold Festival, Baltic Triangle, Liverpool. Sunday tickets £10. Championing up and coming talent across art and music, Threshold Festival takes over various venues around the Baltic Triangle for a jam-packed weekend of entertainment. If you can’t scrape together the £10 for Sunday’s shows, head down to the Albert Dock for a free fringe event. Can’t say fairer.
