Weekly Fashion Fix: Death To The Chino

Men of Great Britain – it is time to act now.

Weekly Fashion Fix: Death To The Chino From John O’Groats to Lands End, the ubiquitous camel chino is taking over the legs of men up and down the high street. It is the indie kid’s answer to the low-slung jeans worn by lads who play Ministry of Sound anthems too loudly from their iPods. It is the go-to item for every Friday night outing on too many Magners. It is basically the Ben Sherman shirt of the 90s: everywhere.

Men of Great Britain – it is time to act now: “death to the chino!” For the sake of individuality, we implore you to make a stand. To help you on your merry way, we bring you wool, corduroy and tweed…

Ah Farah: the vintage lover’s trouser of choice. But don’t be fooled into thinking these are chinos: 1. There is no sewn-up rolled-up cuff at the hem. 2. There is nay a carrot shape in sight. 3. We say so. Farah Albany Twill Trousers from Amazon £60.

While very few of us have £192 to spend on a bit of leg wear, we thought we’d show you these to give you an idea of what can be achieved from a pair of woollen trews (that’s Scottish for trousers obvs) from a charity shop. Or you could always splash all your Chrimbo cash and be done with it. Marc Jacobs Mens Wool Twill Trousers £192 from Oki-Ni. Bare ankles not obligatory.

Barbour jackets have been getting an outing by all and sundry recently, so it’s no surprise farmer chic has worked its way into the trouser world. We like these Penfield Millwood Green Tweed Trousers for £50 from Urban Outfitters. As good for the city as they are for a countryside ramble.

If you’re ready to break away from the chino trend but not quite up for embracing total eccentricity, reach for a pair of trusty denim jeans. We can’t fault these Premium Vintage Mid Wash Slim jeans for £42 from Topman.

Cords are no longer only available in flared varieties, so lovers of the skinny jean should make the shift over to these Corduroy Slim Fit Jeans by Uniqlo. They’re down from £29.90 to £19.90 and they’re so smart we reckon they’d even pass muster as office wear (if you’re that way inclined).
