Weekly Fashion Fix: Style Icon: Compo
With heritage chic at its height, now is definitely Compo’s time to shine.

The scruffy old giffer famed for trampling the Yorkshire moors with Foggy and Clegg in Last Of The Summer Wine might not be your obvious style icon, but with heritage chic at its height, now is definitely Compo’s time to shine.
Whether you’re planning on rolling down a hill in a tin bath or not this winter, one thing’s certain, it’s time to wrap up warm. Keep yourself toasty in this Chunky Cable Knit Sweater for £28 from Matalan. For an authentic Compo twist add your own holes and mustard stains.
Raid your Grandad’s wardrobe, or alternatively pop down to your local M&S for a brushed cotton check shirt like this Multicoloured Check Twill Shirt for £29.50. It’s a must for any Yorkshire man’s winter wardrobe.
Compo may have favoured a bit of old rope to keep his trousers up, but we’re preferring these rather old school Braces for £12 from Topman.
Ok, so there’s no denying the £300 price tag on this Tweed Workwear Jacket by cool label, Common People, is way beyond Compo’s budget, but we couldn’t help ourselves. Perhaps it’s down to the ASOS model’s slight resemblance of a young (and more surly) Fran Healy that hooked us, or (more likely) it’s down to the fact it’s made from 100% British woollen tweed and cut in a paired-down simple style that won’t date. A splurge that will pay for itself - we reckon.
Compo wore his year round, but your standard beanie-wearing months in Last of the Summer Wine country lie between September and April. For understated OAP style, kit yourself out in this khaki wool-blend Howick Cable Knit Beanie Hat for £20 from House of Fraser.
Finally, a pair of trousers that look like they’ve been raided straight from a charity shop collection bag: cue these Check Trousers for £25 from Pop Boutique. They’re 100% polyester so don’t be surprised if you get more than your fair share of static shocks. For an even higher chance of a buzz, wear over thermals.
