2010 Tips From The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart

POBPAH tip a few bands near their home.

Posted 12th January 2010, 5:49pm in Features, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart

We're not really huge fans of lists (unless they're of the Christmas or shopping variety) as when used to mark the start or end of something (the year, say, or the decade...) they all seem to be the bloody same. We don't really want to tip Ellie Goulding, or The Drums - you know they're going to do well, everyone else has already told you. So, we've got some other people to tell us who they think should be big this year, and who will be big this year. Different people it seems have interpreted this different ways, and it's all interesting stuff. Last week we started publishing them, in a feature a day (some are quite short, you see). This here might just be our last one.

There are a couple of bands that we all Pains love that also seem like they're heading for big things in 2010: The Drums and The Big Pink. Seems like some press have picked up on both (although The Drums will be able to re-drum up some buzz with a first full album, I think), but next year will probably be big breakouts. Hard to predict that sort of thing, but if the signs are right...

There are a bunch of bands we'd be really happy to see become widely loved next year - The Depreciation Guild (lush guitar-pop with 8-bit backing and GREAT songs), Zaza (dark, swirling rock), Knight School (homemade, irresistible crashing-around indie), The Smith Westerns (teenage lo-fi glam-influenced stuff) and Dream Diary (super new Brooklyn band, very twinkly and whispery and pretty). There's always a ton of great new bands, so I'm sure someone will come out of the woodwork and surprise everyone, too.
