The Great Escape kicks off today (14th May 2009), and here's the second installment of our picks of the best bands to go see. Check it out before you leave.

Peggy Sue

They’ve lost their Pirates but added a drummer, which can only mean extra oomph from the best lo-fi soul you are likely to find. Lyrics to make you chuckle, incredible harmonies and DIY ethics combine to wonderful effect. And amidst the international showcases the city will be awash with it won’t hurt to show a local band a bit of support.

Listen out for ‘Superman’.

Playing Friday 20:00 @ Borderline + Saturday 20:00 @ Po Na Na

Artefacts For Space Travel

This is raucous pop designed to tip the anxious over the edge. They’re hooks are panic inducing, their vocals wailing and their futuristic melodies haunting, and put the whole thing together and they make for a refreshingly haunting punk sound. And they’re on right before the next band in our list.

Listen out for ‘Power of the Brain’.

Playing Friday 21:00 @ The Freebutt

Screaming Tea Party

It doesn't matter how many times you've seen them play, or how well you know their record: you must see them again. Poised to surprise, effortlessly bound to impress; Vivian Girls are a timeless live act. And they're all really hot too, so be prepared for a harmony of acoustics and esthetics.

Like all the best things to come out of NYC only rolled into one cockney package, via Tokyo. They clamber from pop-punk to a type of laid back cool only the Velvets could muster and if you can stand still long enough to listen in hard, which is unlikely, they will prove that pop-punk is not always a lyrical black hole.

Listen out for ‘Holy Disaster’.

Playing Friday 22:00 @ The Freebutt

Video Nasties

What better way to kick off your weekend than with some all out scuzz-pop. Imagine listening to The Strokes-go-pop through a broken boombox in a rundown underpass not aromatically blessed and you’ve got one foot in the world of a Video Nasties gig. If you ever liked Razorlight before they became absolute (fill in choice expletive here) then you might want to lend this lot an ear. They could be better and slightly less mainstream.

Listen out for ‘JellyBean’.

Playing Thursday 20:00 @ Levi’s Ones To Watch, Audio

We Were Promised Jetpacks

With their Post-punk of the very highest pedigree and charm oozing from every melody you can almost forgive the ridiculous name. Stablemates of Frightened Rabbit they were always going to have endearing qualities but don’t be fooled; the energy provided by songs such as ‘Quiet Little Voices’ is bound to lead to some excellent pogoing opportunities so make a point of getting involved while they are restricted to these tiny venues.

Listen out for ‘Ships with Holes Will Sink’

Playing Thursday 20:00 @ Fatcat showcase, Water Margin and Friday 19:15 @ HoneyClub
