Breton: Liars - 'Sisterworld'

We've had a lot of albums on heavy rotation at BretonLABS this year. Forced to choose I'd have to opt for Liars 'Sisterworld'. Five albums in and they're still able to mix their unique brand of light-hearted Avant Garde-ism and maintain the position of being a genuinely interesting and innovative guitar band. From Angus' opening drawl on 'Scissor', this record swells and bursts with a cinematic suspense that no-one else came close to all year. The production and arrangements are smattered with details and subtleties that only reveal themselves after repeat listens. The viewfinder packaging was a stroke of genius too. As if that wasn't enough, they dropped a bonus "remix" disc that had epic cuts from Alan Vega, Carter Tutti, Tunde Adebimpe and Thom Yorke. 'Sisterworld' is the complete package. We were privileged enough to share a bill with the band earlier this year at Constellations Festival and they opted to sidestep any etiquette, destroy any notions of duplicating the record live and simply tear through their set like men-possessed. Liars are a band that answer to no-one and make no artistic compromises but still manage to funnel their output into an album's worth of alternative Pop songs.
