Film: Reviews: Captain America
The last of this summer's superhero onslaught has a lot to live up to, after the wonderful pomposity of Kenneth Branagh's Thor and Matthew Vaughn's stunning, stylish and sexy X-Men: First Class.
Sadly, potentially the bravest of the lot limps along in Joe Johnston's good-looking but insipid Captain America: The First Avenger. It begins promisingly with the origins of Marvel's war hero Steve Rogers. The muscular Chris Evans is digitally shrunken to play puny asthmatic Rogers, desperate to enlist in the US army and join his best friend Bucky (Sebastian Stan) in World War II. Unlike the odd glimpses in the trailer, the short, skinny and weak-jawed Evans looks incredible, and Evans brings plenty of pathos to this brave young man (anyone who fights disrespectful loud mouths in cinemas is already a hero in my book).
