DIY @ Hinterland Festival, Thursday 30th April 2009

Here's what happened on the Thursday night at the inaugural Glasgow festival.

When DIY HQ was contacted months and months ago and asked if we'd like to put our name to a stage at the inaugural Hinterland Festival up in Glasgow, our response went something along the lines of "Er... YES!?". It was the first time we'd been asked to put our name to such a thing (of course in the interim there was our Camden Crawl fringe event at The Good Mixer).

So on receiving our line-up and venue from the festival types, we were pleased to discover we'd be able to watch Metronomy and call it work, and get lots numerous times in the many corridors of The Arches.

The half of DIY HQ who'd hotfooted it (trans: got the train) up to Scotland for the event got even more excited, however, when it transpired Metronomy were to be playing their first show without recently departed bassist, Gabriel Stebbing (stay tuned to DIY TV for the boys' interview, too).

Here's a brief photo story of what happened on the first of our two nights...

Manda Rin

This is DIY Records artist and local girl, Manda Rin, with some of her band, who opened for us. Her set included a rendition of The Ronettes' classic, 'Be My Baby', although sadly there were no slightly inappropriate Phil Spector jokes.

Pearl and the Puppets

Then was another Scottish act, Pearl and The Puppets. This is, rather obviously the eponymous Pearl, singing in to a microphone. Amongst her set - a mixture of solo efforts and songs making the use of her bongo-wielding backing band (The Puppets, we assume) - was the night's second cover, a folksy version of Kings of Leon's 'Use Somebody'.

Metronomy

This is Metronomy's new bassist. He's very cool. They also have a real life drummer on stage with them now. She's very cool too. They sounded heavier than last time we saw them, and their new songs are sounding very good indeed. The room was rammed full, it was nothing short of wonderful.

Copy Haho

Finally, another local band (so local some of them went home between soundcheck and their set), Copy Haho. In their post-gig interview with DIY TV, they invaded The Fall's dressing room (trans: it appeared they had entire corridors to themselves) and forgot what day it was.
