First Listen: Art Brut - Art Brut vs Satan
Here's our 'first listen' of Art Brut's new album 'Art Brut vs Satan'.
If you're familiar with Twitter, this might just about make sense. If you're not you might just think we've gone a bit mad. Either way - here are our reactions, comments and thoughts based on our first listen of Art Brut's new album 'Art Brut vs Satan', which we first Tweeted over here, then copied and pasted below. Apologies if this turns out to be an epic fail, there'll be a 'proper' review appearing at some point in the future, too.
Art Brut album first play. Track 1. Quite good as a soundtrack to checking our emails. Should have paid more attention, really.
(It was called 'Alcoholics Unanimous', btw)
Track 2: 'DC Comics And Chocolate Milkshake'. Reminds us of another song by Art Brut. Which is kind of what all Art Brut songs do.
Track 3 is called 'The Passenger'. We hope in a few years it will try to sell us car insurance.
Unfortunately we cannot give you a proper review of this track as @emmaswann won't shut up.
It does sound a bit more like a song from a normal band who wear shoes on stage, though.
Track 4. Reviewers dream: 'Am I Normal?' REPLY FROM ALL|: No!
Bit choppy. Not sure about that one on first listen.
Track 5: 'What A Rush' 'You like The Beatles, and I like the Stones, but those are just records that our parents own.'
Indiepop question of the day: When Eddie blames it on 'a rush of blood to the head' - does he just have a complex about Coldplay?
Track 6: 'Demons Out' - this sounds like some anti pop musicians rant. It better not be.
If this record comes out with any comments about Girls Aloud or McFly we're turning it off. STATEMENT OF INTENT.
If we were Art Brut, we wouldn't be saying we hated the Record Buying Public, unless they don't usually sell that man...y...... oh! :(
Track 7: 'Slap Dash For No Cash' We can't think of much to say about this one. It's a bit 'meh'. 1min 10 left - maybe it ends on 'a high'
It didn't.
Track 8: 'The Replacements' - you could probably guess the content of this one from the title, tbh.
I was thinking more The Donnas :( RT @emmaswann: @thisisfakediy the guitars sound a bit blur?
We may be being a bit harsh now, cos of the anti pop sentiments of track 6. 3 tracks is enough of a punishment, though.
'Second hand records are cheaper' - but they also come with 'Thanks for the support Zane!' scribbled on them if you get them in Camden
Track 9 is called 'Twist And Shout' - we hope it's a lustful goodbye to the music of ITV Sunday night drama Heartbeat.
It isn't.
RT @emmaswann: Did he really just sing "second hand records are cheaper?" Yes, they are. I bought one of your 7" for 50p the other week.
'Something slipped and it just popped out' - we hope this isn't a true story :(
'La la la la la la la la la la la la la' - Eddie tries to sing. 'That bit was a little bit horrific' - @vikisinden
Track 11. 'Summer Jobs' - starts like Sting is just reaching climax. Then suddenly turns into '22 Grand Job', kind of. Quite like this one.
Though the 'wooaaaahooooooah' bits sound a bit like Vampire Weekend, rather than Sting. This may not be a good thing.
'Get another job, get a summer job' - Eddie repeats what the nice lady down the benefits office has been saying for the last year :(
Apparently, according to @rocklouder, liking Art Brut is like how you like your retarded cousin.
Track 11. Last track. 'Mysterious Bruises' - erm, this doesn't sound very Art Brut.
All a bit 'serious', really. Usually Art Brut at their worst still manage a 6/10. This track is a 4. We don't like saying that. Sorry.
It's also 7 minutes long. 7 minutes. Art Brut. 7 minutes. SEVEN MINUTES. Madonna can almost save the world twice in that time.
Hmm. Initial thoughts - it's good, but probably not great like we expected Maybe a 7/10, though that last track doesn't do any favours.
In fact, that last track may push it to a 6. Saying that, the reviewer will no doubt totally contradict editorial AS USUAL
Going to give it a few more plays through the day. See if it's a grower. We usually quite like Art Brut, so hopefully it is.
