The first week in August annually heralds Maes B, the biggest Welsh language music festival. It’s a week long and is held in a different place every year. This year it’s in Blaenau Gwent starting on Saturday July 31. If you’re going, here are four acts that you should definitely take the time out to see.

Cate Le Bon

Cate Le Bon’s dark folk rock along with her beautiful, eerie voice have seen her gain critical acclaim after releasing the English language album Me Oh My last year. On stage she’s aloof which polarises opinion but it’s a refreshing break from the crowd ‘pleasing’ singalongs forced upon you by some of the older, middle of the road bands and her talent as a singer and songwriter is undeniable.

Clinigol

Clinigol have been waving the electro pop flag more or less by themselves in the Welsh language music scene over the past few years. They’re two brothers with a ton of infectious choruses and guest vocalists and it will be interesting to see how their set suits the big tent setting but the promised foam machine probably won’t make things any worse.

Crash Disco

18 year old Gruff Jones is still very new and is one of the competitors in the Battle of the Bands nights held on Monday and Tuesday (the winner gets a support slot on Saturday, a £1000 and a live session on C2 on Radio Cymru). He makes excellent chiptune songs that mark him out as potentially the progressive but also simultaneously listenable artist that the Welsh scene needs.

Derwyddon Dr Gonzo

This energetic nine-piece headlined last year and they combine brass, funk, rap, co-ordinated dancing and costumes for their fun, fast-paced and memorable sets.
