A Place To Bury Strangers – So Far Away
On first listen, the APTBS characteristics are all here. Insistent marching drumbeat? Check. Ethereal, shimmering, distorted guitar? Check. Reverb laden vocals? Check. Bloody loud? Check. There are subtle nuances though. For one thing, despite the reverb and distortion mentioned above, the clarity of the production is new. Where before they were a near straight Jesus & Mary Chain rip, So Far Away takes the flirtation with ’pop’ on last album Exploding Head to a more pronounced conclusion. For one thing, you can make out what Oliver Ackermann is actually singing. It’s a more conventional song in it’s structure. It’s....catchy. It’s really good.
Words: Joe O'Sullivan
