The Maccabees - Walking In The Air
DIY’s latest cover stars are men of many gifts: acclaimed albums, excellent haircuts and this, quite possibly the most grandiose Christmas cover of all time. Taking the Aled Jones original and turning it into an art-pop explosion can’t have been an easy task, but the warbling guitars, trumpet fanfares and Orlando’s tremulous vocals mark a definite success. Imagine The Snowman, but in a thunderstorm.

Tracks comes but once a week, except this one. Already punch drunk from your round up of the best music of the week? Prepare to get absolutely legless, as we've tasked our writers with identifying the best alternative Christmas songs and packaging them up for your tree dressing pleasure.
From Low to Sufjan, via The Maccabees, Death Cab For Cutie, Slow Club and Los Campesinos - there are more hidden (and not so hidden) gems than you'll remember, and not a Michael Buble Christmas album in sight.
So, stick on the mulled wine, start sorting out the fairy lights and work out if tinsel actually does make an attractive hair accessory as we bring you the first part of our double header on the best festive songs. Ho ho ho.
