Sullivan Stapleton has reportedly been cast as the lead in the sequel to Zack Snyder's 300.

The Hollywood Reporter learn the Australian actor will play Xerxes for new director Noam Murro. The Persian king-turned-god leads an army against Themistokles' Greek army, with events taking place at the same time as 300's epic battles.

Eva Green was recently cast as Artemisia, with the currently untitled film previously known as 300: Battle of Artemisia. Zack and Deborah Snyder return as producers of the project, inspired by Frank Miller's graphic novel.

Stapleton had a key role in terrific crime ensemble Animal Kingdom, and went on to star in Sky 1's Strike Back. He'll next be seen alongside Ryan Gosling and Sean Penn in Ruben Fleischer's 1940s LAPD drama The Gangster Squad.
