Jason Statham is to star in the new film from Brian De Palma.

The director of Scarface, Carlito's Way, The Untouchables and the first Mission: Impossible is to remake Heat. Don't panic - we're not talking about Michael Mann's classic 1995 thriller, but a 1987 film starring Burt Reynolds.

Deadline report William Goldman (The Princess Bride, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) will rewrite his original screenplay, which was based on his novel.

Statham will play a recovering gambling addict who makes his living providing protection for the gambling world. When a female friend is beaten up by a mobster, the bodyguard will get in over his head.

The actor is also acting as producer for Heat, which will shoot in France at the end of the year. Statham will next be seen in The Expendables 2, Parker and Safe. De Palma recently returned from a five-year hiatus to start production on Passion, rumoured to star Noomi Rapace and Rachel McAdams.
