Eyebrow-raising news for a Wednesday morning - Morgan Spurlock is to direct a 3D One Direction movie.
The Oscar-nominated director of acclaimed fast food documentary Super Size Me will also produce the film for Sony, alongside Simon Cowell, Ben Winston and Adam Milano. A release date of 30th August 2013 has been scheduled.
Spurlock is to be given unlimited access to the wildly successful boyband, who were discovered on 2010's The X Factor. Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson have now sold more than 13 million records worldwide and have broken the coveted American market; they made history when 'Up All Night' was the first UK group's debut album to enter the U.S. Billboard 200 chart at No. 1. They've just released their second album Take Me Home.
Variety have statements from Spurlock and Cowell:
"This is an incredible opportunity and an amazing moment in time for the band," said Spurlock. "To capture this journey and share it with audiences around the world will be an epic undertaking that I am proud to be a part of."
"I'm delighted we're making this film and Morgan is the perfect person to give that access-all-areas, behind-the-scenes look into what it's like to be One Direction today," said Cowell. "What the band have achieved is incredible, they and their fans have made history around the world - this is for them."
Spurlock's last film was The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, with Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope on the way.
