Youth Lagoon might have split opinion with his ‘A Year Of Hibernation’ LP - some fell completely and utterly in love, others watched it fly straight over their heads - but one indisputable asset that record had was honesty. It felt like an album that was totally unadulterated; unhinged and unaffected by the desires of record labels or an awaiting fanbase.

Smoke Don’t Smoke blog is on the money when describing Hypno Safari’s work as honest. There are rough edges here; sections of a song that merciless producers might otherwise have cut off. It’s a bedroom project of the rawest cut. But like Youth Lagoon, it sees no boundaries when it comes to showing off a sense of character or attitude and because of this, the music is hugely charming. Logan Hyde actually tours as Youth Lagoon's guitarist, so a lot of this makes sense when you consider the comparisons.

Editor's note: How about that, since the time of writing (that is, the very day after this piece was published), Hypno Safari called it a day and is no more.
