First On: Kid Captain

This is a band who certainly embrace the sound of past greats with influences being worn loudly on their collective sleeve.

Kid Captain Who are they?
Things are picking up pace for Kid Captain. The Midlands-based band plan to release a limited vinyl single this year after recent studio sessions with Gavin Monaghan resulted in some of their most exciting new tracks being recorded. A fairly substantial tour will kick off this month with dates spanning the whole length of the country.

What do they sound like?
Taking the howling vocal stylings of Morrissey and the sentiment of the rest of The Smiths, the band then combine it with a fresh, relevant guitar sound whose frantic style could be compared to some of Editors' more aggressive numbers. The recordings have an epic quality, with vocalist Kristian Jones sounding especially impressive over the complex, layered sound the rest of the band create.

Why are they so great?
This is a band who certainly embrace the sound of past greats with influences being worn loudly on their collective sleeve, but Kid Captain are no sound-a-like band; the intelligent, complex tracks they have created are testament to that. There's frantic guitars, atmospheric sound, strong lyrical content and most importantly passion! This is the kind of sound you wish Morrissey was making these days.

What should I be checking out?
'Contrast In Winter' is certainly one of the band's most accomplished songs. From the intro, your attention is grabbed with the tight-sounding drums played with a crashing dominance, and guitars stabbing right in to the heart of it all. When the vocals kick in they're instantly engaging, Kristian belting out the lyrics with a confidence that'd have you believe they've been singing these songs for a decade.

'The End Is...' has a slightly darker sound, led by some fantastic guitars that are at their best when frantically tearing through the song at a breakneck speed. It also includes some of the band's best vocals, Kristian's extensive range being exposed as he sings with conviction. A passionate, edgy song that probably just pips 'Contrast In Winter' for best track bragging rights.
