Whatever your views on internships, you’ve got to appreciate the style with which Soundcloud hand out theirs. Having already had beatmaster Seams in, they’ve since turned to another up and coming sensation, though this time one usually based even further away from their Berlin base.
Kohwi - real name Cory Levinson - has been making waves online for a while now, largely thanks to the highly impressive 'Hidden Trees' EP, released towards to back end of 2010. Whilst Seams had the relatively easy trip from the UK to mainline Europe, Kohwi’s had to travel from Ann Arbor, Michigan, to help the company out. The gamble it seems is paying off, with latest track 'Leaving is a Feeling' seeing him hit new heights with his strange, sample based pop, and a new vein of creativity promising us an EP in autumn.
There’s more than enough to bathe in for the moment, though. Whilst many contemporaries like to make sharp, static tracks, Cory revels in creating songs that sound as though they’re dripping, a humid tropical storm of ideas. In the wake of everything Gold Panda has done to overshadow the bedroom producing community in terms of texture, this feels as though you could swim through it, all silky beats and forgiving rhythms. Anyone who’s had even the most cursory of trawls through their archives will understand how special Kohwi is.
