First On: MONAS

Music for dark, underground rituals.

Australia producer MONAS sees fit to define his music through one single word: “Funeral”. To picture the funeral he’s describing is quite the task - half of his first track sounds rooted in a Middle Eastern ritual, the other beneath layers of Earth crust, at some exclusive underground ritual; more concerning than the cult Tom Cruise joins in ‘Eyes Wide Shut’.

Use your imagination and you’ve got a fairly unique funeral. MONAS helps lift a sound out from his home country, Australia, like we’ve never heard before. Previously, we’ve been given a limitless supply of sun-tinged glo-fi pop, but this producer makes music that’s far darker, more rooted in suburban alleyways than Bondi Beach.
