As most onlookers dither around hopelessly, aiming to find the ‘sound of the future’, very often the perfect example of a more well established genre of music will pass them by entirely. This seems to have been the case with Straylings, a project of Bahrani/Austrian songwriter Dana Zeera and former member of The Veils, Oli Drake.
That last nugget of information (Drake’s experience with The Veils) helps explain the immediacy of a track like ‘Carver’s Kicks’. Bold enough to warrant full attention without politely asking, it’s a fine display of hard-hitting alternative rock, with a delightfully melancholic inner core. Following a brief pause in a career that made ground in 2008, surely Straylings have a stunningly bold record in the locker.
The ‘Entertainment on Foreign Grounds’ album is released later this year. It follows on from a self-titled EP.
