In order to learn the most about a band in the shortest time possible, we put Vinyl Jacket through our quick fire quiz. DIY: saving you time and energy.
Hello. Who are you?
Hello! I'm Sam Quilliam
Where are you from?
I'm from a lovely village called Wylam in Northumberland, near Newcastle.
Where are you based now?
A house in Wylam.
What role do you play in the band?
I play a few things which include: synth, keyboard and lots of percussion. But I would say the most important instrument I play is the triangle....triangle 4eva!
Where did you meet?
Most of us met through our musical theatre backgrounds – we were a part of a performing arts company. We all (except Andy, our guitarist who lives the next village along) live in Wylam and spend stupid amounts of money on pub quiz machines. Actually, come to think of it...I think it was the pub quiz machines that brought us together.
What's your best band moment?
Just recently actually (in March), we supported Little Comets at Northumbria Uni which was great for us. It was a gig we were looking forward to for a while and it didn't disappoint. It was packed and the reception we got was great. And to put the icing on the cake....we could actually hear ourselves! The sound was mint there.
Tell me about your worst live performance?
One that will always stick in my mind is a covers gig we did. We were pretty new as a band and we got asked to do this gig at a village hall. The night was going ok until it came to us playing 'Our House' by Madness. I lost count of how many times we repeated the chorus at the end. None of us really knew what we were doing with the song so kind of smiled and danced along whilst repeating the chorus at least 10 times - it's good the audience had had a few to drink!
When/what/who was your first radio play?
It was August 2010 on BBC Radio 6 by Mr Tom Robinson. He has been great to us!
How did that happen?
We were lucky enough to be able to perform live to him. Generator, a great organisation from up here, puts on an annual 'Transmission' gig. 4-5 bands are selected to play in front of a panel, including Tom Robinson. He seemed to really enjoy us. Then everything spiralled from there! We've been getting played by Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne and Huw Stephens. We were Huw's record of the week which meant we got played on over 40 regional BBC shows, which was a bit tasty!
Are you working on an album?
Not currently, no. We are working on our next single release and preparing for a busy few months of gigging!
What are you listening to at the moment?
I'm listening to quite a bit of Lisa Mitchell and Darwin Deez. We're extremely excited to be gigging with Darwin Deez at the Evolution Festival!
What's so great about the North East?
The music scene up here is huge right now. The bands here are ridiculously good and to be a part of that is so great for us. It also home to the greatest football club in the world...Wylam Brewery FC!!
Who's the most famous person you've ever met?
Oooh, that's a toughy. I see many a footballer from the almighty Newcastle United. But I would probably have to say Michael Fish and Paul Mooney. I am trying to make my way through all the weather presenters, with the ultimate goal being Mayte Carranco.
Where do you see yourselves in five years?
Ideally playing in front of loads of people singing the words to our songs. I'll hopefully have some facial hair by then.
Where can people see you play next?
We play in York on the 1st of April and Manchester on the 2nd of April.
