Ali Love's debut album didn't get released (it was due in 2007), but it's ok, because he didn't like it anyway. His new debut album will be released next year.We try to have a chat with him about what went wrong last time, and what's going to be different now. It's all a bit short, to be honest, but if you can fill in a few of the gaps yourself it's a bit interesting...
Hello Ali Love, how are you?
Fine, thank you very much.
Did your debut album 'Love Music' really not get released in the end? We only realised that may be the case when we saw it on Wikipedia...
Yes that's true. I didn’t like it very much anyway - everything I did on Sony was a little bit too glossy.
Does this make your new one your proper debut? Or is it being pimped out as your second album anyway?
I suppose it is my debut album, because the other one never got released.
Is there anything you / you're new label Back Yard are doing to avoid the not-so-greatness of your last album campaign?
I didn't have an album campaign!
[There was a release date announced, singles released, album promos made up... But anyway.] You've just released a single, 'Diminished Returns', which some may take as sounding a little bitter about the whole thing. Is it about that, or something else entirely?
'Diminishing Returns' is about drink and drugs and fast women.
How did you find recording the new album? Was it a fairly smooth process, or...?
Everything I put on this record has come from much deliberation and focus on what needs to be done. When an idea that comes from nowhere manifests physically in the world for me personally it's always exciting.
Is it similar to the last one? Or a different beast altogether?
The album I thankfully did not release felt like a collection of random songs. I’m very glad that this is my first album because it has a concise sound and a definite vibe.
And finally: what was the most exciting thing to happen to you during 2009?
Excitement is relative.
Ali Love's new single ‘Diminishing Returns’ is out now, with his 'debut' album to follow next year.
