Class Of 2008: Model Horror

'We had a teacher who was hard of hearing and we didn't bother to correct her when she was wishing us well with our band 'Mortal Horse'.'

Model Horror It's 2008: and no, we're not sure where the last twelve months went either. What we are fairly certain about, however, is that it popped up more than a couple of ace bands for us to get all excited about.

We've taken the best of the bunch that got DIY Towers buzzing and quizzed them about both themselves and what they might get up to in the next 12 months. Not universally sure fire bets for unit shifting superstardom, we're expecting good things from them all.

Someone ring the bell, then. The Class of 2008 is in.

OK, we're going to be honest. Obviously we love Model Horror quite a lot: DIY Records is releasing the boys' single 'We Are Here' / 'Stand Still' in March, after all. However, we already loved them during late 2007, before the dotted lines had been signed on, which is when we got them to answer our Class Of 2008 questions.

Who are you, and what do you do?
We are a quintet called Model Horror from Letchworth Garden City. Living in the small town together makes the music writing very intimate, however shouting out your flat window "Get round here, I'm on to something" is not always the way to win neighbors. Model Horror consists of five guys who like to use hard keyboards and clean bass and are, as we speak, applying their trade to great affect around the country.

What's the best thing about being in a band so far?
The best thing about being in a band is the growing bond we have with certain service stations in the UK. Followed closely by playing raving gigs and getting the crowd on the boil for a good 40 minutes.

...and what's the worst?
The price of petroleum nowadays and the looks you get from elderly relatives when you try and explain what you've been up to since you left school.

Why do you think 2008 is going to be a great year for Model Horror?
Now that we've lost our jobs and the football's down the swan, we will have that extra time to take the music to the next level.

Are you making any new years' resolutions?
We are going to try and visit more service stations.

If people were to listen to just one of your songs, which one would you hope it was and why?
At this stage none of us can agree which track it would be. It seems to be each time a newbie is made, it's crowned king. If things progress as we hope, our next single.

Where do you hope to be in twelve months' time?
Explaining to the bank that we aren't selling drugs or committing benefit fraud just that loads of people are buying our music and we are making a buck.

What's the worst piece of advice anyone's ever given you?
There were a lot of contenders but it has to be at a gig we did in Cornwall. We took a tent with us but were convinced by our manager to put it up after the gig. Blind drunk we cracked open the tent bag and finding no poles we decided skinny-dipping would be much more fun.

If Model Horror were to have a motto, what would it be?
'Never test the temperature of water with both feet'.

What would be your reaction if someone were to cover one of your songs on X Factor?
I'd be pretty chuffed to be honest. Until Louis said 'Superb voice, I just didn't like the choice of song'.

Do you have an album in the pipeline?
We have a few tunes knocking about but we will see what the New Year brings. I wouldn't say in the pipeline just yet.

Who'd be your dream producer to work with?
LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy or Daft Punk might add a bit of spice!

Remixes are, it would seem, 'all the rage'. Who would you just love to remix one of your tracks?
We are big fans of Cut Copy, MSTRKRFT and Thin White Dukes remixes.

What does it take to be a fan of Model Horror?
Anyone can be a fan. Even if you don't like our music, I'm sure you're a nice person deep down.

What's the weirdest thing anyone's done at one of your gigs?
Someone came out the toilets wearing just the Model Horror boxers we were selling at the gig. I think he got chucked out after three songs when the boxers landed on Sim's drums.

Tell us something random yet interesting about you.
Once we were in the van on the M6 at about 3 in the morning and someone said 'does anyone else imagine themselves cutting down trees and lampposts at the side of the road as you drive past?' Turned out we all did.

You're part of the DIY Class of 2008 - what was your favorite subject at school?
As we all went to school together this is a good question. We owe a debt to the music department for putting up with us, and for the piano we stole one night. Collectively though our favorite subject was English. We had a teacher who was hard of hearing and we didn't bother to correct her when she was wishing us well with our band 'Mortal Horse'.
