Client

David Lynch meets air Europe down a Berlin alley? We caught up with Client A for a quick chat.

Posted 8th June 2006, 7:54pm in Interviews, by Missy Campbell
Client Client have recently added a third girl to their electro-pop act, bassist Client E (otherwise known as Emily Mann, who featured on Five show 'Make Me A Supermodel'), and are spending the summer playing and DJing at various events, both in the UK and mainland Europe - not to mention a trip to Mexico. We spoke to Client A (aka Kate Holmes) to catch up.

How was your recent tour? Any shenanigans to report?
We just did a gig in Razzmatazz Barcelona with Ladytron girls DJing - that was amazing - the place was packed and everyone sang along (though it was at 4am so maybe that is why!). We also did 3 dates in Germany last month, we played in Potsdam in an old wash house right near where they filmed Fritz Lang's Metropolis - it was amazing! We made a podcast of the show you can download free too from iTunes!

You seem to make good use of the internet in spreading your music, are you a fan of the whole online 'thing'?
We gave away tracks when we first started Client in 2003. I remember Andy Fletcher (we were on his label Toast Hawaii) saying the internet was never going to help music and we in our stubborness wanting to prove him wrong! We put up lots of "home mixes" live shows and even short films - I believe this has really helped us worldwide - especially Europe and Eastern Europe.

You've taken part in many collaborations, who have you most enjoyed working with?
That's hard - we loved Pete and Carl - that was an amazing time for us - I recorded Pete's vocals myself at home and my hand was shaking on the mouse. I knew I had only 2 or 3 takes to capture him as he was in his suit and hat on the way out somewhere - it was intense. Carl was different - he did his vocals at Mute studio's and we did as many takes until he was happy with the result. Martin Gore was an email vocal - now that was mad, but he is such a lovely guy he added loads of amazing gospel backing vocals, they made you tingle when you heard them

Do you have another album in the pipeline?
We have just finished 6 tracks with Youth producing - we are working on a few more and the album is sounding really exciting.

Where does your style come from? Who are your fashion icons?
We love anything 1940s. our outfits are modelled on airhostesses / prisoner camp commandants / bank clerks / secretaries. David Lynch meets air Europe down a Berlin alley.

Tell us about Loser Friendly Records.
I started a record label to put out Client records - then we signed to Mute! We may put out the next Client record on LF but I am just interested in licensing finished albums - like for instance IAMX.

What have you got planned for the rest of the year?
Gig- record- DJ - rest!
