Giant Drag

'It doesn't make much sense, bands are the ones going on tour and working their asses off while record label people get drunk at shows and buy houses.'

Giant Drag Someone once called Giant Drag nĂ¼-grunge. DIY isn't quite sure what the flaming Nora that's supposed to mean, but in our Big Book Of Bloody Ace any band with tracks like 'YFLMD' (thats 'You Fuck Like My Dad', kids) and 'Kevin Is Gay' are more than alright. We figured we'd catch up with Annie Hardy for a quick chat, like you do.

You've just been on tour with Pretty Girls Make Graves, how was it?
It was good, I think we'd forgotten what it's like to tour the US since we've been in the UK for our last 3 tours. All the bands were great people and got along really well and most of the shows went great.

What's the LA 'scene' like at the moment?
We hardly get to be at home and when we are I pretty much stay at home so I don't know too much about a 'scene' but it seems like there's a fair number of really good bands here at the moment.

Do you find playing the UK different to playing the US?
It's a lot easier to tour the UK because it's smaller which is very nice and the fans seem more enthusiastic than some of the American crowds. We're better known in the UK I think, which seems to be the case with many bands, so we headline and sell out or own shows which we don't do in the US unless its an LA show.

Your track 'Kevin Is Gay', is it about Kevin Spacey?
No, it's not about Kevin Shields either, it's about a friend of mine.

Can you tell us about 'Pink Cell Phone'?
It's a track on the new Deftones album that I do some singing on. It's a really cool song, Chino wrote the beats, it's kind of electronic/club type song.

Your album 'Hearts And Unicorns' has been around for nearly a year now, have you had a chance to think about new material?
We have 3 songs we've written since the album came out that we play in our live set and a few others we work on whenever we get the chance but we've had no time off to really work on anything.

What're you up to over the next few months?
We're playing the European festivals in July and doing Reading and Leeds in August and two festivals in Brazil in September. Then we have to figure out why we don't have any money and how we're supposed to live and pay rent.

Finally, tell us something about yourself / your band that not many people know.
I think I answered that in the last question, we're poor. People think because they see you in magazines and hear you on the radio that you must have money but you don't. Micah doesn't even have a place to live right now and I haven't even got half of next month's rent money. It doesn't make much sense, bands are the ones going on tour and working their asses off while record label people get drunk at shows and buy houses. Basically everyone makes a living in this industry except the artists, which obviously rules and is totally fair. Or something.
