Glastonbury 2011: Cage The Elephant

"People scare me"

Posted 23rd June 2011, 4:07pm in Interviews

Cage The Elephant recently released the follow up to their 2009 selt-titled debut. DIY caught up with the Kentucky band ahead of their set at Glastonbury this year.

Hello, who are you and what role do you play in the band?
Hello, my name is Matt and I do hand claps for Cage The Elephant

How many times have you performed at Glastonbury?
Well, I guess we played Glastonbury once before; kinda un-officially as we weren't actually on the bill. We played a festival within a festival and it was really strange.

What's your Glastonbury (or Festival) postcard moment?
We started a mud flight with the crowd and the stage manager was so angry he tried starting a fight my brother Brad (who plays guitar for Cage The Elephant).

Who will you be looking out for in the backstage area?
Everyone, people scare me.

How do you plan your festival set?
Very carefully.

What makes Glastonbury special?
The People.

What's your worst festival memory?
We once played a predominantly EMO festival in New Jersey.

Have you ever worn fancy dress at a festival? If so, what did you dress up as?
Sadly no, but there's a first time for everything...I wore a pretty little dress during our performance at Coachella this year (but I wouldn't consider that to be fancy dress). I much prefer dressing up when I'm home alone! I wear my favourite red lipstick, slip into my silky smooth kimono ...and tell it to "put the lotion on its skin, or else it gets the hose again"

How do you deal with Glastonbury weather?
"......It puts the lotion on its skin."

Which festival, in your opinion, is sporting the best line up this year?
Coachella was amazing and Glastonbury looks pretty heavily stacked this year as well.

Finally, where else can we see you play this summer?
Reading & Leeds, Rock En Seine, Lollapolooza, Suumer Sonic (Japan), Lowlands, Pukklepop, Jersey Live, Summerfest, Festival de Quebec, Ottawa Blues Festival, The Edge Fest, Lodestar Festival

Cage The Elephant play Glastonbury's John Peel stage at 3.30pm on Friday 24th June
