Kid Carpet hasn't had a great time of late. Firstly his support dates with King Biscuit Time are pulled after the former Beta Band star decides to pull the plug on the project entirely, and then he didn't play Brighton due to a breakdown on the way there. Still, all can't be bad in 'Carpet world - we had a quick word with the man to find out. You've been playing quite a few festivals this month, how have they been? Which has been your favourite?
Reykjavik Tropik was my favourite because I got to go to Iceland and I met loads of amazing people. My show went so well that the headline band gave me 15 minutes of their set to play again. Naturally I was assholed by this stage. Hey, some of it is up on Youtube.
Real instruments vs Toy instruments, what are the plus points and pitfalls?
Toy instuments don't go out of tune (well, not often). Toy instuments are cheap. Once you've lost your favourite 2nd hand toy instument it is very hard to find a replacement. People think you're a joke when you pull out a plastic guitar, then you rock it harder than a BC Rich and your audience is headfucked. Vunderbar.
Where's the best place to go for all your toy instrument buying needs?
Car boot sales, charity shops and the side of the road.
Do you find it difficult recreating your live sound in the studio?
No, the opposite. I find it hard to recreate my studio sound on the stage.
How's your second album coming?
Ok. My tricky 2nd album is gradually taking shape. I should have a single or EP out in october and the album should drop in the spring. I don't have a title for it yet, apart from Kid Carpet's Tricky 2nd Album but track titles so far include: 'Can't Stop the Pop', 'U Got Me', 'Make it Look Good', 'Cowboy, MVFK', 'The Kid's Back', 'Too Much', 'Still Life', 'She's a Vegan', 'Boob Job', 'I was Pissed', 'Oh Bollocks', 'Hitting the Wall', 'I Don't Believe' and 'All Join On'.
How did you get involved with Tired & Lonesome?
They phoned me up. Then they offered me a show. Then a tour. Then an album. I said no. Then I said yes.
What have you got planned for the next few months?
Continued writing and recording. A few festy dates. Oh yeah, The Carpet Megastore Radio Show begins it's once a month broadcast on Thursday the 6th of July for an hour 8-9pm on the internest. And I'm gonna launch the Bullshit International Football Association.
Finally, tell us something about yourself not many people know.
I'm thinking of retiring from international football with England so I can concentrate on my Scotland career.
