We spoke to the band during last year's festival, but thought it timely to catch up with The Joy Formidable ahead of this year's Reading and Leeds, where they'll be appearing alongside Klaxons, Foals and Wild Beasts (and more) on the NME/Radio 1 stage. Answering on behalf of them all is vocalist Ritzy. Have you played Reading and Leeds before? If so, what happened?
This will actually be our third time at Reading and Leeds, so you can deduce that we're big fans of the festival. Last year was an important show, symbolically, after a year of touring and self releasing, to step out to an audience and a reaction like the one we received. It felt fucking great and we're looking forward to this year.
Who are you hoping to see while you're there?
Weezer, Surfer Blood, Wild Beasts, British Sea Power, Phoenix...
Who do you wish were playing the festival?
It's a more than satisfying line up, but if you're going to push me, then The Strokes, I keep missing them.
Who would you like to see collaborate over the weekend?
Guns N Roses meets Dizzee Rascal.
Do you, or have you ever gone to festivals as a fan?
Absolutely, and we always try and spend the whole weekend at the festivals we play. Camping is the only way, none of this dipping in and out, sleeping at hotels crap. Bring on the mud, sunstroke and warm beer.
What's your festival food of choice?
Kendal mint cake
Have you ever stolen from another band's rider?
What's this, Crimewatch?
Reading or Leeds?
Ummm, what's the question?
