Golden Triangle There's little Golden Triangle could do that wouldn’t be a crowd pleaser at their CMJ showcase. The band, often categorized as somewhere between a girl-group and punk rockers, perform with aplomb, with the two female singers shimmying and banging tambourines to the sounds of a retro-guitar.

The night has its technical difficulties - trying to recreate the open-ended sound that is heard on their .mp3s, the band lay heavy on the reverb causing often obnoxious levels of feedback both during and between songs, rendering lyrics inexplicable - but that said, the band make up for it with songs about Cinco de Mayo, with plenty of “oohs” and “aahs” as hooks. Along with the occasional male background vocals, Golden Triangle could be the punkish younger sibling of the B-52s. The balance between mosh pit and beach party fervor with the vocal doubling of the lead singers creates an eerie, almost ghoulish sound completely working for the band.

Occasionally they move away from the beach party atmosphere to harder pieces, evoking a sound reminiscent of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, but they keep both the crowd and themselves moving throughout the entire set, which seems to end only too quickly. With songs like their closer and single 'Prize Fighter', the band would fit easily on a beach, in a back alley or, if they had a time machine, CBGBs. Rating: 7/10
