SXSW 2010: Kimya Dawson, Auditorium Shores, Austin God it’s good to hear Kimya Dawson. SXSW is many things, but very rarely intimate.

Kimya Dawson came into her own in the alt-folk scene of New York’s Lower East Side as one half of the Moldy Peaches, but since then she’s been all over the world. Austin, Texas is only her most recent stop. Safely cloistered away on the other side of town, far away from the madness of East 6th Street and its many cacophonies, she picks a much-loved guitar in the quick, back-and-forth so familiar to her fans.

Speaking close to her microphone, Kimya summons the magic of her studio recordings on stage. Or is it the other way around? However you want to look at it, spending a few minutes listening to the prolific, quick-witted singer songwriter always ends up feeling a bit like a lullaby. But like any good bedtime story, this performer only piques your attention further, and when she leaves you there alone at the end of it all, there’s that familiar sense of loneliness, and a longing for just a little bit more. Rating: 9/10
