Neu: These FurrowsListen
It's better to think big.
When you're an alt-rock band, it's safe to assume that the majority of things you can do whilst confined to that tag have already been done. There have been slightly too many of those kinds of groups springing up all over the country in recent years, so if you want to get ahead, first you have to get noticed - and the 'easiest' way to do that is to take risks. Ambition may not be its own reward, but it's better to think big.
Just ask These Furrows, a Leicester-based trio that have been gathering a considerable amount of steam in the two years since the release of their debut EP, 'Masks'. They have a knack for throwing just about everything they can think of into their material, pinballing between genres, sometimes within the space of thirty seconds. Their music does not merely suffer from ADHD, though - the group know exactly what they're doing, and it's definitely paid off for them so far. As previously mentioned, however, things are just beginning, and the long-awaited debut album is set to surface later this year.
From what I've heard of it, it's going to be stunning: forthcoming single 'Duke', an aggressive and typically unpredictable song, is merely the tip of the iceberg. As if to hint at their willingness to experiment, they go from one extreme to the other on b-side 'Clarity', a gorgeous, mostly-instrumental piece full of atmosphere and emotion. There's no question of their ability to pen great songs either - melody is king as far as this lot are concerned. Their rise has been steady, but now the band stand on the cusp of much wider acclaim. Their album will surely be sweeping and ambitious. They've lived by a philosophy of risk and reward, and there's a massive pay-off just around the corner. Watch this space.
