The University of Winchester has given former Libertine Carl Barat an honorary degree recognising his contribution to the arts. Professor Elizabeth Stuart, Senior Pro-Vice-Chancellor announced "The University is delighted to honour such a creative and reflective performer", adding Carl was an innovative member of contemporary British music. Winchester University is no stranger to the Barat family, with his mother currently in employment there and his sister graduating with a BA in Drama in the same year.
The former Libertine and Dirty Pretty Thing carried out his acceptance speech at Winchester Cathedral where he spoke of Pete Doherty, drugs and joining other musical legends such as Brian May in receiving this accolade. He also added that he seized the opportunity to gain the doctorate "before they realised it was a mistake".
