There’s been plenty of noise about Dave Grohl's forthcoming documentary film Sound City, which is to be accompanied by a companion soundtrack featuring collaborations with artists who have recorded at the Sound City studios.

We’ve already heard one offering from the record, with the Paul McCartney / Nirvana collaboration ‘Cut Me Some Slack’ premiered late last year, but Grohl has more than one big idea to promote the release. Now he's put together a new live band to tour with the film.
"Pretty soon, everyone will hear what our big plan is. We’ve been planning it for a long fucking time."
The group, Dave Grohl's Sound City Players, will make their debut on January 18th at Park City Live as part of the Sundance City Film Festival in Park City, Utah. According to a press release, the band will feature core musicians and special guests from the documentary. That means pulling from a potential cast of names including Trent Reznor, Josh Homme, Corey Taylor, Stevie Nicks and Foo Fighters bandmates Taylor Hawkins and Nate Mendel.

Last month Grohl told Rolling Stone he hoped to accompany screenings with a live performance. "After each premiere we could have a show with musicians,” he explained. “They’d not only play music from the film, but from their catalogs as well. We could do it in a Hammerstein or Roseland and pack the bill with the coolest bands in the world . . . We aren’t far away from this. Pretty soon, everyone will hear what our big plan is. We’ve been planning it for a long fucking time.”

‘Sound City’ the film will premiere at Sundance Film Festival, with a digital release to follow on February 1st 2013. The album is due on March 12th via Grohl’s own Roswell Records label. ‘Cut Me Some Slack’ is available for download now.
